I was lucky enough to live in Costa Rica for a while and experience the sounds of the howler monkeys first-hand. During my stay at a cozy Airbnb in the jungle near the coast, I was greeted every night by the sounds of these amazing animals. They would jump from tree to tree and create a concert of howls that was simply unforgettable.

University of Utah anthropologist Leslie Knapp. She her team found that howler monkeys face an anatomical trade-off: a species can either have a really big hyoid bone, or it can be very well endowed. Generally quieter than other primates they share their range with such as gibbons and macaques, langurs often spend much of the day quietly browsing foliage in the mid-storey of lowland and hill rainforests. They make a variety of vocalizations including soft grunts and hoots and much louder guttural snorts, barks and alarm calls. Often the best indicator of their their presence is the loud crashing sounds of branches as they leap from one tree to another.
Recorded audio of a Howler Monkey in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. As their name suggests, vocal communication forms an important part of their social behavior. They each have an enlarged basihyal or hyoid bone which helps them make their loud vocalizations. Group males like the one you hear in this recording generally call at dawn and dusk, as well as interspersed times throughout the day. I recorded this one at dusk. The main vocals consist of loud, deep guttural growls or "howls". Howler monkeys are widely considered to be the loudest land animal. According to Guinness Book of World Records, their vocalizations can be heard clearly for 3 mi (4.8 km). The function of howling is thought to relate to intergroup spacing and territory protection, as well as possibly to mate-guarding.

Although there are numerous species of monkey in the world, the two most common that people are familiar with are monkeys and baboons. While monkeys have tails, baboons do not. Monkeys are often described as being small or snub-nosed, while baboons can range in size from small to large.
Many people also confuse monkeys and apes because they share some similarities. They both live in the trees and have long arms for grasping branches. However, apes have tails, while monkeys do not. Also, apes tend to be larger than monkeys and have longer snouts with teeth designed for eating leaves.
Apes live in the tropical woods of Western and Central Africa, as well as Southeast Asia. Apes make gibber sounds. Apes are usually more intellectual than monkeys, and the majority of ape species utilize tools.

It has been proposed that synchronized oscillations play a key role in perceptual feature linking and sensory integration. This idea was supported by the discovery of strongly synchronized stimulus-specific oscillations in the visual cortex of anaesthetized cats. The 'synchronization hypothesis' was controversial because in the visual cortex of awake monkeys either only weak or no oscillations were found. We have now recorded high amplitude synchronized oscillation at the level of spike activity and local field potential from the primary visual cortex of an awake monkey. The dominant frequencies (70-80 Hz) were considerably higher than those observed previously in cats and monkeys (30-50 Hz). However, stimulus specificities of the oscillations were comparable to and amplitudes even higher than those in cats.
During a brainstorming session for an upcoming early childhood class, my partner Katey mentioned that she had written a song about monkey sounds. She suggested picking up some cute stuffed monkeys to use as props, which sparked the idea for this song.
I wondered if this was related to actual monkeys? I know Salford had a thriving docklands area and I have read a number of stories and anecdotes relating to animals at sea. Were these two factors connected? I also worried that the phrases might be references to race. Ports and docks were places that men from across the globe could secure employment and where new immigrants arrived looking to start new lives. Were these derogatory and racist references to growing communities?
It is actually not bad at all, I was pretty surprised in a sense that it is usable although a bit dark sounding, but it is definitely not just a gadget. It sounds quite good with the gain on minimum as well, it gets you a usable Jazz/Blues type of tone.
